XML

XPath Tester

Run an XPath expression against local XML and inspect selected nodes or scalar values.

How this tool works

XPath helps target nodes in SOAP, RSS, configuration, and XML API fixtures. Explicit prefix mappings allow expressions to address namespaced elements.

Browser XPath is XPath 1.0. Default namespaces still require a mapped prefix, and this tool does not resolve external resources.

Examples

  • Select all item elements.
  • Read an attribute value.
  • Bind a namespace prefix before querying.

Common use cases

Assert a SOAP response field by namespace URI.

Worked synthetic example

Valid example

<o:order xmlns:o="urn:orders"><o:id>7</o:id></o:order> | //o:id

Expected: One id element with text 7. The expression uses a prefix mapped to urn:orders.

Failure or warning to recognize

Warning / interpretation

//item against XML whose item elements belong to a default namespace.

Expected: An unprefixed //id query against a default-namespace document returns zero nodes; bind the namespace URI and retry.
